SPRING 2010 EVENTS
PSYCHOLOGY & SPIRITUALITY LECTURES
Spirituality and Emotional Suffering:
Learning from Memoirs of Mental Illness
April 26 (Monday) 9:30am–2:30pm [RESCHEDULED]
Explore autobiographical accounts of living with psychiatric disorder in order to better understand the most profound aspects of psychic anguish and the spiritual issues associated with such suffering. Memoirs produced by persons experienced in such soul-suffering have much to teach us about identity, the nature of suffering itself, care that harms and care that helps, and how to seek healing even if cure is not an option.
Kathleen J. Greider, professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling at Claremont School of Theology and Professor of Religion at Claremont Graduate University

Soul Types: Exploring Spiritual Pathways through use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator  [Register Online]
March 8–29 (4 Mondays) 7:00–9:00pm
Emily Wallace,
MAPC and Certified Facilitator of MBTI since 1980

We will discover our preferences through taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, looking at our dominant gifts and at our least used preferences. Learn about the spiritual paths that nourish our souls and the kinds of prayers, hymns, and worship experiences that feed each of us.

WEBER MEMORIAL LECTURES
Singing the Song We Almost Forgot:
Christian Faith Post-Christendom
 [Register Online]
March 12 (Friday) 9:30am–2:30pm
Brian D. McLaren, founder of Cedar Ridge Community Church and author of Everything Must Change: When the World’s Biggest Problems and Jesus’ Good News Collide (Sept. 2009)

What is “church” today? How can we understand the shifting kaleidoscope of religious temperaments around us, finding our place as followers of Christ? What’s dying and what’s being reborn in this chaos? What new questions must we ask, and what will answering them faithfully cost us? Is there a coherent song into which we invite others — not of homogeneity but harmony?

Gracism: Building Inclusive Congregation
  [Register Online]
April 16 (Friday) 9:30am–2:30pm
David Anderson, founder & president of the BridgeLeader Network, a diversity consulting firm

“Cultivating the soil for tomorrow so that it is ready when a multicultural seed comes to the garden of your unicultural community is a wonderful way to live.” David Anderson’s reflections on “gracism,” the attitudes and practices that foster inclusive ministry, can be applied at any stage of a congregation’s becoming a vital (and varied) community of faith.
