2008-09 Annual Fund Update
We thank each of you, our alumni and friends, for your commitment to the mission of the Seminary and the many ways that you nurture the next generation of leaders through giving, mentoring and recruiting.

The books were closed on the 2008-09 Annual Fund on July 1st and we are delighted to report that the Seminary was only ONE GIFT SHY of meeting our goal of 50% alumni participation! If you ever wondered if your gift matters — here's a perfect example where every gift truly makes a difference. Especially during these unsettled financial times, we are extremely grateful for the dedication of our friends and alumni. THANK YOU!

Follow the Blog: Our students & faculty dig in Israel
Thanks to the wonders of technology you can share in the regular updates and pictures from our students and faculty who are in participating in the Ramat Rahel Archaeological Project in Israel. Jointly sponsored by Moravian College and Seminary, the trip is co-led by Dr. Deborah Appler, OT professor and Dr. Jason Radine, Moravian College Religion professor. The group of 21 faculty and students from both institutions will update us regularly through their blog while digging from July 20-August 15th. http://houndsintheground.wordpress.com

New Testament Professor Begins in Fall
MTS is pleased to announce that Dr. Timothy Luckritz Marquis will join the faculty this fall. Tim received his PhD in New Testament Studies from Yale University and most recently taught in the Biblical Studies department at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. In the classroom Tim likes to explore innovative approaches to issues of economic justice, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity by tracing the diverse paths taken by early Christians living the Gospel. He is interested in the role of travel—understood as “taking up the cross”—in establishing early Christianity as a new political imagery. The next time you're in Bahnson Center please stop by and say hello to Tim!

Capt. Glenvil Gregory '06 serves as Chaplain in Iraq
MAPC alumnus Glenvil Gregory is utilitizing his gifts as a pastor and pastoral counselor while serving in Iraq as chaplain of the 1st Battalion, 108th Field Artillery. Glenvil's experience of ministering to the spiritual needs of his fellow soldiers and leading small group worship services recently made the news. Prior to coming to MTS, Glenvil served as a Moravian pastor in Antigua and was a member of the Virgin Islands Army National Guard. He transferred to the Pennsylvania Guard in 2005 while studying at the Seminary. This is his second deployment, having served in Guantanamo Bay with the Puerto Rico National Guard in 2007-08.

Continuing Ed Publicity Gets "GREENER"
For 20 years the annual programs of our Continuing Ed office have been publicized with a 20+ page catalog mailed out in mid-August. With a commitment to lighten our carbon footprint, we will now mail out a brochure in mid-August highlighting our fall programs (it will include the dates of the Spring events.) In January another brochure with descriptions of all of our Spring events will be mailed out. We estimate a savings of over 500 pounds of paper by transforming the catalog to a brochure! If you can't wait for your brochure to arrive in the mail, you can always find our Continuing Ed events (and register!) on our website.

It's Here: The Graduate Certificate in Formative Spirituality
Beginning this fall, MTS will launch the new Graduate Certificate in Formative Spirituality, a 21-credit program that enables students to deepen their own spirituality and that of others. The courses ground students in the contemplative tradition while helping them develop skills to form and facilitate formative spirituality groups in churches, agencies or other communities. This could be a perfect complement to your ministry, more info.

CROSSROADS Lay Training Program Begins This Fall
The Office of Continuing Education is now taking applications for CROSSROADS, a new program designed for lay people, church staff, and pastors who are seeking quality theological education but are limited by schedules, finances, or have not obtained a bachelor’s degree. Participants may take the courses they are interested in or can enroll in the entire program, which can be completed in 2 years and includes 16 CEU-granting courses and a 40-hour Community Missional Experience. Courses are offered during the day, evening and weekend to better fit working schedules. Learn more about CROSSROADS here.

Alum publishes book on theology of early Moravians
Rev. Dr. Craig Atwood '87, who teaches theology at the School of Divinity at Wake Forest University and serves as its Director of Admissions, has recently published The Theology of the Czech Brethren from Hus to Comenius. Reviewer Katherine Carte Engel of Texas A&M University notes the book "makes a vital argument for the importance and lasting insight of the Unitas Fratrum" whose theology centers on the key concepts of faith, love, and hope. Find Atwood's book on Amazon.
