This course explores the earliest interpretations and depictions of Christ’s crucifixion as found in the New Testament and earliest Christian literature. We will explore various interpretations within their social contexts, considering ritual, economic, political, and ethical dimensions. Issues such as redemptive suffering, imperial oppression, poverty, ethnicity, masculinity, apocalyptic, and Christology will be central, but class discussions will allow us to investigate other aspects of this central Christian event and how its meaning has been and is expressed among various communities.
