As the oldest religious expression of humanity, which has laid the basic foundation of all modern religions, shamanism has attracted scholarly attention in the areas of anthropology, religious studies, and ethnomedical studies. Scholars are in intense disagreement over the historical Jesus, but some believe that Jesus’ essential historical identity was rooted in shamanic tradition. As an advanced study of the New Testament, this course explores the shamanic aspect of Jesus’ healing ministry through an interdisciplinary as well as intercontextual examination of the roles of shamans in various communities. Keeping in mind the necessity of interreligious dialogue in a global mission, this course is designed not only to equip students with meaningful discussions for interreligious dialogue which will be useful for their minstries, but also to acquaint students with the shamanic aspect of healing ministries as they pursue their own ministries.
