Why did Isaiah run around town in his birthday suit? Was Deutero-Isaiah a woman? Who is the suffering servant? This course will examine the Book of Isaiah, focusing on its messages, rhetoric, and relevance for their ancient audiences and for today’s church. Attention will be given to the historical situation, the literary form, and the canonical shape of Isaiah. Since the Hebrew prophets have provided a strong link between Judaism and Christianity, discussions will also include how early Christians interpreted their messages.
