Have you ever wanted to know why innocent people suffer while the unrighteous often prosper? Or how we should deal with acts of terror? This course will examine the wisdom books, Proverbs and Job, in light of these and other questions, focusing on their messages, rhetoric, and relevance for their ancient audiences and for today’s church. Attention will be given to the historical situation, the literary form, and the canonical shape of each book. Since the wisdom literature and the psalms have provided a strong link between Judaism and Christianity, discussions will also include how early Christians interpreted these texts.
