This course will explore the first book of the Bible, Genesis, with special attention to gender roles. We will examine the text through the multifaceted lenses of critical biblical scholarship, employing exegetical methodologies such as (but not limited to) ideological criticism, cross-cultural comparison, literary analysis, intertextuality, feminist and womanist theory, autobiographical criticism, midrash, socio-historical criticism, and biblical archaeology. In addition to Genesis we will also read selected ancient Near Eastern literature, other biblical texts, non-canonical writings, the Dead Sea Scrolls, selections from the 1st century Jewish historian Josephus, rabbinic writings and early Christian commentaries as we attempt to understand the various interpretations of the Genesis text throughout history.
