This course is a survey of the first sixteen centuries of the Christian church (or churches). Topics covered include the development of Christian doctrine, liturgy, social teachings, and spirituality. Christianity will be studied in a global context and students will explore the diversity of Christianity from 100-1600 CE, including the formation of the Orthodox, Coptic, Syriac, Catholic, and Protestant churches. Attention will be given to the relationship of Christian life and thought to changing social and political contexts. This course will help students make sense of the complexity of Christianity and will provide them with resources for pastoral ministry and theological reflection.
