| A parish pastor for ten years before coming to the Seminary, Otto approaches the study of church history with pastoral, cultural, and liturgical concerns. He encourages his students to find precedents from the past that will help them in leading congregations and doing pastoral counseling in the contemporary world. He tries to address the cultural contexts that inform the church’s life and ministry, both in North America and in the larger world.
Mission history and contemporary cross-cultural missions are always at the forefront of his teaching. His current research focuses on the history of Moravian worship and the ways in which Moravian liturgical practice changed as the Moravian Church in America changed its communal identity. |
