The famous American preacher Phillips Brooks once described the sermon as “truth mediated through personality.” In the first of a projected three-session series for experienced preachers (to be followed by “Exegeting the World: The Outer Work of the Preacher” in Fall 2012 and  “Exegeting the Congregation: The Homiletical Work of the People” in Spring 2013), we will explore ways in which the preparation and delivery of sermons can be enhanced and energized by our own deep, personal engagement with the biblical text, drawing on Robert Dykstra’s book, Discovering a Sermon: Personal Pastoral Preaching.

Steve Simmons
, an ordained Presbyterian pastor and Director of Continuing Education at MTS, has served churches in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Oregon.
