As life becomes faster and more complex, pastoral counselors are increasingly called both to be centered in their deepest selves and to be able to offer this ‘still center’ to those with whom we meet. Formative Spirituality is a growing dimension of ministry that strives to develop this capacity through an emphasis on the contemplative and mystical aspects of faith formation. The focus of Formative Spirituality is on both becoming oneself and facilitating in others the “human person fully alive” through psycho/spiritual dynamics, integrating an understanding of the contemplative formation of the mind, body and spirit.
This retreat will look specifically at how to integrate formative spirituality into pastoral counseling, focusing on contemplative practices that can deepen pastoral counselors personally and on exercises that can facilitate deeper listening, ongoing growth and the cultivation of greater wholeness in the individual seeking therapy. The rhythm of the day will provide a balance of input and opportunities to experience contemplative exercises through praying the hours, contemplative noticing, and individual/community practices that nurture the call both to be and to help others be God’s greatest gift.
