What does it mean to live a sacralized personal life, one infused with devotion to God in all phases of the life cycle, including such bodily and psycho/spiritual experiences as puberty, marriage, marital relations, pregnancy, childbirth, the nursing of a child, bereavement, and the subsequent redirection of sexual energy towards Christ in the later stages of life?

In these lectures, Dr. Faull will consider this question by examining modes of pastoral care practiced by Moravians in the 18th century in their individual and corporate life at “the intersection of care for the body and soul.” “Whether through a memoir, through the Speakings, or through the regular and public report of the activities of the Gemeine, Moravians during the long 18th century were presented with multiple opportunities to reflect on their lives as aesthetic and verbal constructs.  How does this change their concept of themselves as spiritual beings?  And what, if anything, can we learn from this today?”

Katherine Faull is Professor of German and Director of the Program in Comparative Humanities at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. She holds degrees from Princeton University and the University of London, and has been the recipient of three National Endowment for the Humanities Grants that helped fund her groundbreaking research on Moravian women in the 18th century. Dr. Faull serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Moravian History, and is the editor of several books, most recently Masculinity, Senses, Spirit.
