What happens when pastoral leaders listen carefully to the spiritual struggles within congregations? Based on 20 years of research and activism to prevent male violence against women, James Poling brings to voice often unarticulated questions church members are asking. These lectures focus on two central doctrines of Christian faith: forgiveness and the cross. How can the church courageously examine questions about these cherished beliefs and retrieve empowering messages that lead to salvation and stronger congregational life? Poling offers critical and constructive responses to these questions.

James Newton Poling, PhD, is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), a pastoral psychotherapist, and Professor of Pastoral Theology, Care, and Counseling at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. In recent years he has been doing pastoral research in theology and counseling with a special focus on family and interpersonal violence. He is the author of many articles and books including The Abuse of Power: A Theological Problem, Deliver Us From Evil: Resisting Racial and Gender Oppression, and Render Unto God: Economic Vulnerability, Family Violence, and Pastoral Theology.
