What are the demands and challenges we face in the formation of leaders for the church today? Increasing numbers of churches and theological schools are aware that their processes and frameworks for formation shape men and women for a church and culture that is rapidly disappearing. How does the missional conversation assist us to address the question of formation, and what will local churches need to look like in the future if they are to be mission-shaped communities of disciples?

Dr. Roxburgh will argue that leadership formation in this new time requires a fresh engagement with theological formation and the practices of Christian life. The basic identity and location of leadership will be questioned in terms of current models that form leaders to manage and serve the inner live of congregations. A mission-shaped leadership fundamentally challenges this orientation on the basis of God’s presence in the world through Jesus Christ. Dr. Roxburgh will explore the need for an alternative paradigm of leadership based on the imagination of forming a people who live in what is described as the “space-between” and what that means for theological training.

Alan Roxburgh is a pastor, teacher, writer, and consultant with more than 30 years of experience in church leadership, consulting, and seminary education. He has directed an urban training center and served as a seminary professor and the director of a center for mission and evangelism.
