Moravian Seminary is located in Bethlehem, an attractive tree-lined city of 75,000 in the center of the Lehigh Valley community, with a population of more than 600,000. Six nationally-ranked colleges are located in the Lehigh Valley — Moravian College, Lehigh University, Muhlenberg College, Lafayette College, Cedar Crest College, and DeSales University.
Moravians settled Bethlehem in the early 1700s. Proud of its heritage, daily tours are given of the many original and reconstructed buildings. Today, downtown Bethlehem features shops for clothing, gifts, jewelry, books (at the Moravian Book Shop operated by the Moravian Church since 1745), a movie theatre, and a wide range of restaurants.
Bethlehem is a city which has blended culture and commerce, progress and preservation. Among the cultural highlights are the Bach Festival in May, the ten-day Musikfest drawing a million visitors each August, the Celtic Classic in September, and the events and displays of the Christmas season, which attract many thousands of guests from all over the world.
A special community event is the Moravian College annual candlelight Christmas Vespers in Central Moravian Church. Through its affiliation with the College, Seminary students may audition for the College choir. Students of both institutions may request tickets to attend the Christmas Vespers services.
