The Internet is an important
and potentially problematic source for research material. Students should exercise the
same care in using electronic resources that they do in handling
printed
materials.
Sufficient information
to locate materials online (e.g., a URL or Internet address) must
be given in citations, and the
student must read and evaluate them with the same critical questions
in mind
with which one approaches printed texts. Who has posted the web
page? With what authority does he or she speak, and what is that
person's
institutional affiliation? What presuppositions and biases can
be detected? How current is the information found online?
Because
it
is so easy to cut and paste materials found in electronic format,
students must be especially careful not to misuse them.
