Torah? Tanach? Talmud? Midrash? Ketubim? Welcome to the wonderful world of Jewish biblical interpretation, as experienced by a group of MTS students and faculty at several noontime “Torah brownbags” during the past few months. Meeting with local rabbis Alan Juda of Congregation Brith Sholom, Bethlehem, and Barbara Goldman-Wartell of the Jewish Community Center in Allentown, participants were exposed to familiar passages from Genesis (the Creation, the call of Abraham, and others) in the light of centuries of Jewish commentary and tradition. For most, this was a new experience of viewing the Hebrew scriptures “through Jewish eyes” — very much, actually, as Jesus himself would have read them. It was a rich and rewarding experience for all concerned and the first, we hope, of many. In the coming academic year, the Office of Continuing Education plans to co-sponsor a workshop on the Akedah, the story of Abraham’s near-sacrifice of Isaac on Mount Moriah, with Project Yachad of the JCC.
