38, No. 1 [back] SEMESTER HIGHLIGHTS
Two students, who were earning the MDiv degree from United Theological Seminary in New Brighton, Minnesota, completed their Moravian Year at MTS and earned the Certificate in Theological Studies. Judy Ganz, from DeForest, Wisconsin, was recognized with the Herman T. Frueauff Memorial Prize for outstanding class work and research in the field of Moravian History. She has accepted a call to serve the Edmonton Moravian Church in Alberta, Canada and will begin that ministry in September.
Vicki Jens Page from Appleton, Wisconsin, began serving an appointment as pastor of Grace Moravian Church in Westland, Michigan, on August 1st. She also attended the Moravian Women’s Conference in Tanzania in July.
Mary Kategile of Tabora, Tanzania, received the Henry Gerdsen Prize in recognition of her intellectual, personal and professional growth and involvement in the Seminary community. Mary returned to Tanzania in July where she will resume teaching on the seminary faculty at Teofilo Kisanji University (TEKU). She teaches courses in African Church History, Church History and History of Israel.
Deborah German from Allentown, PA, plans to develop a course regarding supersessionism and triumphalism in Christianity to be used by the Lutheran Church.
Kyle Borowski of Warrington, PA, has accepted a full-time position as a case manager at Valley Youth House in Bethlehem.
Graduating summa cum laude, Nancy Lynch from Macungie, PA, was recognized with the Barbara Martin Stout Pastoral Counseling Prize. After getting married, Nancy moved to Bowie, Maryland, where she plans to take additional graduate courses at Loyola College to meet state requirements for licensure then hopes to serve as a counselor/therapist.
Erin McLean of Easton graduated magna cum laude and plans to continue working in hospice care, specializing in children’s bereavement programs.
Graduating cum laude, Tara Stephenson of Easton hopes to find employment in a community counseling setting or within a college counseling or student affairs department working with young women.
Lenore Stine from Bethlehem is employed part-time at a private practice with Seminary alumnus, William Smith ’00. She also sees clients at CONCERN, where she is an educational consultant for youth with learning disabilities, eating disorders and other conditions.
Maisha Surgeon is working in intensive in-home therapy for Youth Villages in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Elizabeth Vega from Allentown was married in June and is pursuing hospital chaplaincy work, specifically in the hospice setting.
Graduating summa cum laude and recipient of the Faculty Academic Prize, Bryant Brown of Spring Valley, PA, will serve as intern minister at the 600-member Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis, MD.
Cheryl Cottingham, returned to her home in Kernersville, NC, and awaits a call to ministry in the Moravian Church.
Graduating summa cum laude and cum laude respectively, Douglas Donigian and Joyce Donigian of Bethlehem await a call to serve in team ministry in the United Church of Christ. Doug was the recipient of the J. Taylor Hamilton Biblical Language Prize in recognition of his work in Hebrew. Joyce was recognized for her academic excellence and her participation in the Seminary community with the John David Bishop Memorial Prize.
In June, Christopher Greene of Spartanburg, SC, began serving a two-point charge at the Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville, SC, and Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Union, SC.
Robert Hachtman from Stroudsburg, PA, became pastor of Fritz Memorial Methodist Church on June 29th.
Anthony Hayworth of Winston-Salem was installed in July as pastor of Grace Moravian Church in Mt. Airy, NC.
Michael Hedrick of Souderton, PA, hopes to serve as a chaplain in a hospital, hospice, or a retirement community. He will also fulfill his additional course requirements to be ordained in the Anabaptist Church.
Linda Leuser of Nazareth, PA, awaits a call to pastor leadership in a UCC congregation in the Lehigh Valley.
Graduating cum laude, Suzanne Parker Miller of Clemmons, NC, received the Moses Homiletics Prize in recognition of outstanding work in preaching. Suzanne will be installed as Associate Pastor of Raleigh Moravian Church in August.
Mark Ortwein will be relocating from Bethlehem to the Washington, DC, area to pursue the PhD program at Catholic University of America.
Jay Petrella from New Philadelphia, Ohio, served as interim pastor for the yoked Moravian congregations in Coopersburg and Center Valley, PA, from June–August. He has accepted a call to the Bruderheim Moravian Church in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and will begin his ministry there in September.
Adam Spaugh was married in May and will be installed as pastor of New Hope Moravian Church in Hickory, NC, in September. Adam was awarded the Elmer Bender Memorial Award, given to a graduate preparing for ministry in the Moravian Church who most exemplifies the qualities of leadership and integrity reflected in the life of Rev. Bender.
