Alumni Connections: March – July 2008

In September 2008, retired Moravian pastor, Norman Prochnau ‘62, will begin serving as part-time visitation minister at Schoeneck Moravian Church in Nazareth, PA.

After having served as president of the Eastern District of the Moravian Church since 2002, Gary Straughan ‘66 will be installed as the pastor of East Side Moravian Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in August.

A new book by C. Daniel Crews ‘70, archivist of the Southern Province Moravian Archives, was published in June 2008. For scholarly and leisure reading, Faith, Love, Hope — A History of the Unitas Fratrum includes a concise account of Christian history from Pentecost to John Hus, then traces the story of the pioneer Reformation church, the Unitas Fratrum — the early Moravian Church.

Anna D. Lutz ‘70 has recently published Greetings, a compilation of forty-six poems that retells the Christmas story. The book is available online and in book stores and is an excellent companion for devotional reading and as a resource for newsletters, bulletins and sermons.

Kenneth Henke ‘72 was promoted to reference archivist at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey.

After retiring from pastoral ministry, Gerald Loch ‘75 of Watertown, NY, began work as an Energy Use and Financial Management Educator with Cornell University Cooperative Extension. He also serves in a music ministry called “Blessed Assurance.”

Bill Hosking ‘87 began serving the Ephraim Moravian Church in Ephraim, Wisconsin, on April 14, 2008. His wife, Barbara Rich ‘87, ‘93 concluded her ministry at Reading Moravian Church in Reading, PA, and joined Bill in July, where she awaits a further call.

David Bennett ‘88 was elected president of the Eastern District of the Moravian Church (Northern Province) and began serving in that capacity in August 2008.

Lee Johnson ‘93 was appointed associate professor of New Testament Riley Chair of Biblical Interpretation at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, located in Delaware, Ohio. She has just completed her seventh year of teaching on the 20-member faculty serving a student body of around 300.

In May 2008, David Marcus ‘96, associate pastor of New Philadelphia Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, graduated from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago with a Doctor of Ministry degree with an emphasis in Parish Revitalization.

Melissa Johnson ‘01 began serving as pastor for Spiritual Formation and Outreach at Palmer Moravian Church in Easton, PA, in July 2008.

In December 2007, John McCarthy ‘03 accepted a call to specialized ministry in the Moravian Church and serves as a chaplain at HospiceCare, Inc. in Madison, Wisconsin.

Wellesley Ferguson ‘04 began working under pastoral appointment at Fellowship Moravian Church in Brooklyn, NY, on March 1, 2008.

Dean Easton ‘05 will be begin serving as pastor of Lancaster Moravian Church in Lancaster, PA, in September 2008.

On March 6, 2008, Walter Bishop ‘05 was installed as pastor of the Immanuel-New Eden Moravian congregation in Winston-Salem, NC.

On July 13, 2008, Lynne Trout ‘05 was ordained a minister of word and sacrament in a validated non-parish ministry by the Philadelphia Presybytery (PCUSA) and serves as a hospice chaplain for Grand View Hospital Hospice Care in Sellersville, PA.

Deborah Parker Schwartz ‘06 was installed as pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Leesport, PA, in April 2008.

The Penn Northeast Conference of the UCC conducted the ordination of Jeffrey Bauer ‘07 on April 13, 2008. He is pastor of Christ Church UCC in Bethlehem.

Steve Hamilton ‘07 was ordained by the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the UCC and installed as pastor of St. Peter’s Tohickon United Church of Christ in Perkasie, PA, on June 15, 2008. The ordination sermon was given by Seminary alumna, Debra Hepburn ‘05, ecumenical director of Lehigh County Conference of Churches.

In December 2007, Jill Peters ’07 received a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Philadelphia Biblical University in Langhorne, PA, and has contracted with MTS to serve as Missional Leadership Developer from May – Dec. 2008.

In Memory
T. Robert Bassett ‘40, retired pastor and educator, died on July 14, 2008. He served Moravian congregations in Staten Island and Bethlehem. Most of his career was spent as an educator, teaching at Penn State and Moravian College, and later heading the Friends Boys School in Ramallah, Jordan; the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon; the Columbus Boychoir School in Princeton, NJ; and as dean at Linden Hall in Lititz, PA.

Retired Moravian pastor, Charles Eichman ‘51 died on April 15, 2008. During his 43-year ministry he served Moravian congregations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Indiana, and New York. In retirement he served as a visitation pastor of College Hill Moravian Church.

Retired Moravian pastor, Donald Fulton ‘53 died on May 8, 2008. During his 40-year ministry he served congregations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and spent 12 years in the mission field serving congregations in St. Croix and Barbados. He served as president of the Eastern District of the Moravian Church.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Kay Rohn ‘98 died on June 11. She served Moravian congregations in New York and Pennsylvania, and was a driving force within the Provincial Women’s Board (Moravian Northern Province).
