"Hearing God" — Reflections on Lenten Series

The Lenten Eucharist services were planned and led by the members of the Spiritual Life Committee (SLC), Kevin Kinsey ‘09 (convener), Judith Sheriff ‘10, Douglas Donigian ‘08, Christopher Greene ‘08, Carol Olzinski ‘09, and Chaplain David Bennett.

The overarching theme for the series was “Hearing God,” with each Wednesday service being led by a different member of the committee. By not assigning scriptures, we allowed the spirit to work through each of us as we honored denominational traditions and created worship experiences that included music, silence, scripture, poetry, and imagery.

Each service culminated in the sharing of the bread and cup and was followed by a communal meal of soup provided by the graciousness of students and spouses. The soup meal began the previous year and the SLC wanted to continue the tradition and provide an opportunity for students, staff, faculty and visitors to join together as family during this time of reflection. As the warmth of the soup flowed through my body I was reminded of the filling presence of Jesus in my life. I pray and believe that presence was felt in each person who attended as well.

As I reflected on the series — of participating in Eucharist, sharing the meals of soup, and walking the Labyrinth — I heard expressions of appreciation from many brothers and sisters and I felt at peace despite the stress of preparation, follow-though and organizing each session. I genuinely felt God’s presence at each service. My relationship with God has grown.

As the coordinator of this series I struggled with receiving praise and appreciation from those who participated in the services. Upon reflection, I realize now that each thank you was really an affirmation of God’s work in our lives — the blessings and praise were really to and for God. As a leader I felt comfortable and felt, no, heard a renewed sense of calling and leading into ministry. Those times together were a gift from God. May you hear God in your journey with God and may the paths you find yourself walking bring you peace.
