ALUMNI REUNION UPDATE

The 2008 Alumni Reunion  

Over 100 alumni, family members, faculty and staff attended the 2008 Alumni Reunion on March 6th. It was an energizing opportunity to catch up with classmates and former Seminary colleagues.

Special recognition was given to alumni who were celebrating their 50th year graduation anniversary. In attendance from the 1958 graduating class were John Giesler and Frances Huetter, both from Winston-Salem, NC, and William McElveen from King, NC.

The current seniors were welcomed as “soon-to-be” new alumni and the 2008-2011 members of the Alumni Board of Governors were elected. Joining the Board of Governors were Jill Peters ‘07 and David Merritt ‘82. Gordon Sommers ‘61 completed his term as president, and will serve as a board member until March 2009. Elected to the new slate of officers were president Derek French ‘95, vice president Katie Van Der Linden ‘06 and secretary Bruce Bowen ‘01, ‘03.

A highlight of the Alumni Reunion Luncheon was the presentation of the two Alumni Recognition Awards. Each recipient was nominated by their fellow alumni for their distinquished ministries.

Dianne Kareha ‘93, ‘97 was honored with the 2008 Bishop Kortz Award in Pastoral Counseling for the excellence with which she practices pastoral counseling, for her service to the community, and for her strong advocacy of the MAPC program at Moravian Seminary. Former chair of the MAPC Alumni Committee, Dianne currently serves as Chaplain of Luther Crest Retirement Community in Allentown, Director of Music at St. John’s Lutheran Church (Fogelsville), and as Parish Associate for First Presbyterian Church of Allentown.

Honored for his visionary leadership on behalf of the Seminary, Church and community, Douglas Caldwell ‘69 received the 2008 John Hus Award. He was instrumental in the creation of the MTS Alumni Association, the Bethlehem Area Moravians, and two full-care, senior living communities: Moravian Hall Square (Nazareth) and Moravian Village (Bethlehem). He is senior pastor of Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem, where he has played an vital role in forging a partnership between Central and the Sikonge Moravian Church in Tanzania, as well as local organizations including St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Bach Choir.
