SEMESTER HIGHLIGHTS
Lehigh University employee Jason Slipp offered a presentation on eco-friendly living for the October Student Services Luncheon. One might have expected him to be an environmental radical, struggling to live in today’s society. Instead, Slipp represented many in the Seminary community — a graduate student and professional who felt a need to reduce his carbon footprint, while admitting his iPod to be a greatly cherished possession.
Slipp broke down the challenges of his own daily life and explained how he addressed specific problems. He promoted purchasing local agriculture, reusing paper and plastic and unplugging power strips at night. Offering solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle, he recognized that some solutions were inexpensive (putting a pitcher under a leaky faucet for watering plants) while others were more costly (purchasing a wood pellet stove or geothermal heat pump).
Slipp encouraged everyone to offer recommendations on topics like recycling, fluorescent lights and community gardens. His presentation showed the community that something more can always be done for the environment.
MTS has begun to take this initiative with a vibrant reycling program and by using china dishes and silverware at community events rather than disposable plastic. Thanks to the Office of Admissions and Student Life these programs help to increase our awareness and motivation to do what’s right for our world.
