Moravian Theological Seminary
Welcomes Over 100 Students to
the Fall 2010 Semester

Prior to the start of classes on Monday, August 30th, the Seminary community gathered to worship, recognize achievements, welcome new faculty, staff, and students, and participate in fellowship at the official Convocation for the 204th academic year.

This year, 104 students have enrolled in the Seminary. Of these students, 36 are new to the Seminary community. We welcome them and wish them the best as they begin their education. 94 of the students are for-credit, while 10 will be auditing courses.

Following a formal academic procession led by Rev. Dr. Deborah Appler, assistant marshall, associate professor of Old Testament and director of the MATS Program, the community gathered to worship.

The service was officiated by Rt. Rev. Hopeton Clennon, chaplain for Moravian College & Theological Seminary, and Rev. Dr. Jane Williams, associate professor of Pastoral Theology and director of the MAPC Program. The service was enhanced by organ music, played by Rebecca Kleintop Owens. Rev. Dr. Frank Crouch delivered a sermon reflecting on the truths that are the same "Yesterday, Today, and Forever." Those gathered also partook of Communion.

The ceremonies also included recognition of two faculty members for their many years of ordained ministry.

Adjunct professor of Church History Rev. Dr. Walter Wagner received warm recognition for his 50th anniversary of ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Rev. Dr. Samuel Zeiser, bishop of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA offered kind comments regarding his years of service as a pastor, educator, and author, along with his willingness to take on the more challenging issues of interfaith dialogue.

Rev. Dr. Frank Crouch, dean and professor of New Testament, was also recognized for his 30th anniversary of ordination in the Moravian Church. He has served as an educator, pastor for Moravian congregations, and dean of the Moravian Theological Seminary. Rev. Dr. Betsy Miller, Northern Province PEC president; Rev. David Bennett, MCNP Eastern District president; and Rev. Dr. Christopher Thomforde, Moravian College & Theological Seminary president provided memories and opportunities for laughter as they shared remarks in his honor.

The Moravian Seminary community extends congratulations and thanks to Walter and Frank as they continue their service.

In accordance with tradition, a pizza lunch was served after the Convocation. Students, faculty, staff, and guests enjoyed a wonderful meal and opportunity for fellowship as the Fall 2010 semester officially began. Welcome to the new academic year!
