On Monday, August 29th, after a morning of orientation for new students, the Moravian Theological Seminary community gathered in the newly renovated Bahnson Center for a time of worship, recognition and fellowship.
In this 205th academic year, 126 students, including 31 new students and 11 new auditors, have enrolled in the Seminary, creating the largest student body in the history of MTS.
Rev. Dr. Grace Ji-Sun Kim, marshall, director of the MATS program and associate professor of doctrinal theology, led the formal faculty procession at the beginning of the late morning convocation.
The service was officiated by Rt. Rev. Hopeton Clennon, chaplain for Moravian College & Theological Seminary, and Rev. Dr. Deborah Appler, associate professor of Old Testament/Hebrew Bible. Rev. Dr. Frank Crouch, Vice President and Dean of MTS, delivered a sermon titled, "Stumbling Blocks & Cornerstones."
Rev. Dr. Christopher M. Thomforde, President of the institution, also delivered greetings to the community, just prior to Dean Crouch's presentation of several awards to students. The awards included the Weber Text Book Fund, Rev. Dr. Elaine Bogert Text Book Fund, Rev. Elmer D. Bender Memorial Fund, and the Dean's Scholarship Fund.
Following the formal convocation, students, faculty and staff enjoyed a pizza lunch in the new community space. The exuberance for the new space was felt throughout the crowd as individuals noticed more details with every glance. The tradition of hosting a twice annual pizza lunch for all folks at MTS provides an informal setting for fellowship and introductions prior to the official start of classes at 1pm on the first day of the semester.
