Spring Semester begins with Convocation Service

On January 26, Moravian Seminary saw a few new faces at the opening day of the spring 2009 semester. We not only welcomed new students but a new chaplain as well—the Rev. Hopeton Clennon, a Moravian pastor and bishop who made the cross-country journey from his most recent call at Downey Moravian in California.

Chaplain Clennon led students, faculty and staff into the new semester with an opening day communion service. Pulling from a recent musical workshop held at the Seminary, the student-composed song entitled "New Creation to Behold" was sung by the congregation. Christie and David Melby-Gibbons also led the group in Columbian hymn "El mensaje que hoy proclamamos" ("Hear the message we are now proclaiming"), accompanied by drums and guitar. The song was written by Eleazar Torreglosa and was part of the World Council of Church's songs for the week of prayer for Christian Unity 2008. The service concluded with a message from the chaplain, who reflected on his recent interview for his current position, contemplating the concept of chaplain as prophet, priest and pastor.

Students, faculty and staff enjoyed the last few minutes before the start of classes with a pizza luncheon and fellowship. The semester’s classes officially started at 1pm.
