Walter Wagner’s 2008 book, Opening the Qur’an: Introducing Islam’s Holy Book (University of Notre Dame Press), was honored by its inclusion on the "2009 Outstanding Academic Title" list by Choice magazine, a leading source of academic book reviews in higher education. This year’s list was released on January 1, 2010 and consists of only 652 books and electronic resources in 52 disciplines—a notable 3 percent of the titles submitted to the magazine for consideration.
According to Irving Rockwell, editor and publisher of Choice, “these outstanding works have been selected for their excellence in scholarship and presentation, the significance of their contribution to the field, and their value as important, often the first, treatment of their subject.
In recognition of this prestigious award, the cover jacket of Opening the Qur’an will include a seal labeling it as a 2009 Outstanding Academic Title by Choice magazine. The full list can be found in the January 2010 issue of Choice and online at this link.
This is the second award that Wagner has received for Opening the Qur’an. In May 2009 ForeWord magazine recognized it as a 2008 Book of the Year in the category of religion. It was selected by a panel of librarian and bookseller judges from the thousands of independently published books from 2008.
Opening the Qur’an has been recognized as an outstanding, non-partisan step-by-step introduction to the Qur’an for non-Muslim students, scholars, clergy, and general readers. Dr Wagner, a retired Lutheran pastor, credits much of his deep appreciation of Islam and the Qur'an to his experiences teaching at Moravian Seminary, to his relationship with leaders of the Lehigh Valley Sunni and Shi’a communities, and to his work with the Lehigh Interfaith Dialogue Center in Bethlehem.
