Craig Atwood appointed to new faculty post at Moravian Theological Seminary

On May 6, 2010, Dean Frank Crouch announced the appointment of The Rev. Dr. Craig Atwood as the Charles D. Couch Associate Professor of Moravian Theology and Ministry at Moravian Theological Seminary. Atwood will assume this new faculty post in the Fall 2010 semester.

Author of numerous books and articles, Craig's most recent work is The Theology of the Czech Brethren from Hus to Comenius (Penn State University Press, 2009).  In 2005 he published an award winning book, Community of the Cross: Moravian Piety in Colonial Bethlehem (Penn State University Press), and in 2001, a church history text entitled, Always Reforming: A History of Christianity Since 1300 (Mercer University Press). Craig also has served as editor for multiple editions of an important reference work, the Handbook of Denominations in the United States (Abingdon Press, 2001, 2005, 2010).

An accomplished teacher and lecturer in both academic and congregational settings, he currently serves as John Comenius Visiting Professor of Moravian Studies at Wake Forest Divinity School in Winston-Salem, NC, as well as Director of Admissions and Student Services. From 1995–2002, he served as Chaplain and the Clarkson S. Starbuck Assistant Professor of Religion at Salem College, also in Winston-Salem.  He was Theologian in Residence at Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem from 2002–2009, where he engaged in research and writing and taught in the Christian Education program, including a popular, weekly radio broadcast of the adult Sunday School class.

He was ordained into the ministry of the Moravian Church in 1987 and served as pastor of Third Moravian Church in Philadelphia from 1992-94. He has been an active member of Moravian boards and denominational committees including the Faith and Order Commission, the Church and Society Commission, and the Vocations Committee of the Moravian Church; the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches; the Board of Directors of the Center for Congregational Health; and numerous other church and community organizations. From 2000–2010, Craig served as editor of The Hinge: A Journal of Christian Thought for the Moravian Church, an independent publication managed by Moravian leaders and scholars.

Craig received his PhD in Historical Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1995; his MDiv, magna cum laude, from Moravian Theological Seminary in 1987; and a BA in History and Religion from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983.

Craig will be the first appointment to this newly endowed faculty chair devoted to the history, theology and ministry of the Moravian Church and its importance in the larger Christian Church. He will also serve as the Director of the Center for Moravian Studies, an endowment-funded Center that underwrites programs to promote the scholarly study of the life and ministry of the Moravian Church.

The Seminary community looks forward to Craig and his wife, Julie, joining the Seminary community in the fall!
