Commencement Ceremonies conclude 203rd Academic Year

Commencement ceremonies marked the conclusion of the 203rd academic year of Moravian Theological Seminary on Saturday, May 15, 2010 in Central Moravian Church at 4:00pm. Twenty students received degrees and certificates.

Betty A. Helms of Clemmons, NC received the Certificate in Theological Studies.

In preparation for work in professional ministry, nine students received the Master of Divinity:Lunnett Mae Hilliard (Bangor, PA), Reid Paul Lauderman (Lititz, PA), Debra A. North (Cresco, PA), Judith Coleman Sheriff (Tulsa, OK), Dolly L. Tarreto (Standing Stone, PA), Melissa A. Fisher-Trois (Birdsboro, PA), Russell W. Williams (Lewisville, NC), Eric Yeakel (Bethlehem, PA), and Mia Garnette White (Allentown, PA), who will graduate with an MDiv with a Concentration in Formative Spirituality.

Seven students from eastern Pennsylvania received the Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling. Prepared to serve as professional pastoral counselors are Marle I. Fox (Macungie, PA), Jennifer Wood Kiesendahl (Hawley, PA), Sarah B. Z. Miller (Bethlehem, PA), Carol Feilbach Olzinski (Wind Gap, PA), Barbara Ann Sorin (Bethlehem, PA), Deborah Wanaselja (Bethlehem, PA), and Willie F. Williams (Easton, PA).

The degree of Master of Arts in Theological Studies was conferred upon four students who will serve in a variety of ecumenical theological settings around the world: Fatih Harpci (Istanbul, Turkey), Noeloath A. M. Mwakalinga (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania), Juliet M. Williamson (Bethlehem, PA), and Judith Coleman Sheriff (Tulsa, OK), who will earn her MATS with a Concentration in Formative Spirituality in addition to her MDiv.

Selected by her classmates, Mia Garnette White presented the Senior Address, entitled "The Path." [Read Mia's speech here]

Invited back to campus to give the Commencement Address was the Rev. Dr. Glen W. Stoudt, former assistant professor of Pastoral Theology. Glen served on the faculty for five and a half years before returning to parish ministry in February 2010 as pastor of Orleans United Church of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. A beloved professor, Glen was known for innovative teaching, creative worship practice, and the imaginative restructuring of the student internship program. He created new courses, Rhythms of the Church Year and Preparing Laity for Discipleship, and developed intensive Jan Term courses in stewardship and evangelism. In fall 2008 he served as interim Seminary Chaplain while the campus awaited the arrival of newly-appointed Chaplain Hopeton Clennon. [Read Glen address.]
