The Moravian Theological Seminary MAPC curriculum review is moving into a new phase with hopes that the revised curriculum will be rolled out for the 2011-2012 academic year. While primarily aimed at MAPC students, a new post-graduate Certificate program allied with the curriculum will appeal to alums who want to go more deeply into one of several counseling tracks.
For students, two new required clinical courses will be included in order to satisfy licensure requirements: SEPF 936 Human and Faith Development (3 credits) and SEPF 917 Developing Multicultural Competency Through the Lens of the Hebrew Bible (3 credits). Students will be able to take up to 10 clinical elective courses and still stay within the current 62 credit degree requirements.
One of the most exciting changes is that current courses, and some new courses, are being organized into “tracks” that allow students to gain depth (via their electives) in Marriage and Family Counseling, Addictions Counseling, Child & Adolescent Counseling, or Formative Spirituality. If students prefer, instead, to sample several tracks, they can choose to use their electives in whatever courses they wish.
Alums may find these tracks appealing as well, and may choose to earn a post-graduate Certificate by taking 12 credits in one of the above tracks and a 3 credit Master Class (which combines a counseling seminar with case supervision) for a total of 15 credits. Completing a Certificate would enable one to apply to the AAPC (American Association of Pastoral Counseling) for membership as a Pastoral Care Specialist.
