Eastern Philosophy Meets Western Theology in New Faculty Publication

In October, 2011, Rev. Dr. Grace Ji-Sun Kim, associate professor of Doctrinal Theology and director of the MATS program, published her second book, The Holy Spirit, Chi, and the Other: A Model of Global and Intercultural Pneumatology. The book examines similarities between the western notion of the Christian Spirit and the eastern energetic belief of Chi as it addresses the diversity found in global society. "The religions in different parts of the world do not display many spirits; rather in them we find various names for the Spirit," writes Rev. Dr. Kim in a blog post about the book.

Through the lense of pneumatology, the study of the Holy Spirit, the book presents a grounds for discussion between Christians and "the Others," or those following Eastern belief systems. In an Amazon.com review, MTS student Bruce Marold writes that Rev. Dr. Kim, "…raises the banner of the ancient disciplines of China, India, Japan, and Korea in understanding that way in which the spirit acts on and with us."

Peter C. Phan, The Ignacio Ellacuria Chair of Catholic Social Thought, Theology Department, Georgetown University states that Rev. Dr. Kim, "boldly and provocatively opens up whole new vistas on pneumatology and shows that in our global age theology can no longer be done from just one, up to now Eurocentric and androcentric, perspective."

In celebration of the publication, Moravian Theological Seminary will host a reception and signing event on the opening day of the 2012 spring semester, Monday, January 30th, from 12:30-1:30pm. The reception will held in the lounge area of the Bahnson Center, and refreshments will be served.
