Spiritual Direction Certificate Coming to MTS Next Fall

Moravian Theological Seminary proudly announces the advent of an academic and contemplative opportunity beginning in Fall 2012—the Graduate Certificate in Spiritual Direction.  This 24-credit course of study will draw from the disciplines of theology, psychology, scripture, social work, and spirituality.  Students of the program will be required to give and receive spiritual direction, ensuring they will be well prepared to guide individuals and groups in their relationships with God upon completion of the program.  This training will prepare women and men to offer spiritual direction in a variety of settings   providing a valuable compliment to the ministries of nursing, Hospice work, social work, chaplaincy, counseling and church ministry.

Since 2008, the Formative Spirituality Program at Moravian Seminary has evolved to meet the needs of a growing population of students desiring to discern God’s presence in their lives and facilitate that experience among others.  The seminary currently offers a 21 credit Graduate Certificate in Formative Spirituality, as well as a 12 credit concentration in Formative Spirituality that can be combined with a degree program.  The Graduate Certificate in Spiritual Direction can also be combined with the master degree programs at MTS—Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling and Master of Arts in Theological Studies.

Marcella Kraybill-Greggo and Barbara Martell, Co-Founders and Directors of the Formative Spirituality Program, began sensing a “call within a call” among seminary students, and so collaboratively designed the Graduate Certificate in Spiritual Direction.  Both Martell and Kraybill-Greggo expressed excitement over the approval of the program and said students can expect to gain “personal transformation, a more developed contemplative stance in their life world, an increased sensitivity to the movement of the Holy within them and in their communities, and the skills needed to support the same growth in others.”

The Office of Enrollment will host a special Info Session on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 for prospective students interested in more information about the Spiritual Direction and Formative Spirituality Graduate Certificates.  Those interested in attending are encouraged to contact Amanda Griesser or register online.
