“Lord, it amazes me that things that are not visible, strongly influence my life. My pragmatic side pulls me to reason to find the perfect logical explanation; but I hear a higher call.”
(Jackie McCullough, 105 Days of Prayer)
choes of questions surround the life of people in ministry. Similarly, people have asked me a number of questions about how they can build a stronger relationship with their spouses, or how they can help their children become mature adults, or how they can become whole again after a divorce, or the death of a loved one, or even how they can remain faithful to the God they love in the face of a crippling disease. These types of questions tug on my heart and have me earnestly seeking God for an answer.
In addition, out of all the many urgent and reflective types of questions that I am asked, the most pressing one is regarding individual purpose. Earnestly they say, “I hear a higher calling on my life than what I am presently doing, but I am confused, why am I here and what am I called to do, is my life in alignment with God’s plan for me, and who am I called to do it for?“ Again, those searching questions tug on my heart.
Jokingly, I start off saying, “Honey just relax, relate and release!” It is a process of discerning and reflecting on those important patterns in your life and it will take time, it will not happen overnight, and it will challenge your every waking moment, but as you spend time in prayer, through praise and worship in the intimacy of God’s presence, meditating on the Word of God and seeking wise counsel; clarity and direction will come. In the Gospel of Matthew, 7:7, Jesus admonishes us to “ask, seek, and knock” then he concludes with a promise, “and it shall be opened.” We are to trust that God will give us clear direction about our concerns.
...it will not happen overnight...but as you spend time in prayer, through praise and worship in the intimacy of God’s presence, meditating on the Word of God and seeking wise counsel; clarity and direction will come.
One of the most important areas in our lives is our relationship with God. Remember that God did not call us “out of darkness into God’s marvelous light” (I Peter 2:9), for our purpose, but for the purpose of God in order to be a beacon of light for someone else. Our lives are so interrelated with one another. Remember, someone is waiting on the other side of your purpose to help them fulfill their purpose in God. Throughout generations, God called ordinary people, Abraham, Moses, Deborah, Mary and so many more people to do the extraordinary. Their heroic stance brought about a rewarding change which affected the outcome of people’s lives. The higher call of purpose is to strengthen and build the Kingdom of God by empowering our lives for something much bigger than ourselves.
As we relax in God’s presence, and as we relate in becoming the perfection of God’s love to all humankind, we will release our agendas for God’s greater agenda in our lives.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.“ (Proverbs 3:5-6)
