Moravian University School of Theology announces Dr. Greg Carey as Associate Dean of Lancaster Campus
BETHLEHEM, PA, September 12, 2025 — Moravian University School of Theology is excited and proud to announce the promotion of Dr. Greg Carey to Associate Dean of the Lancaster Campus and Professor of New Testament.
Carey will also serve as Chief Academic Officer for the School of Theology, taking on these expanded leadership responsibilities.
Carey has been a distinguished faculty member since 1999, when he joined Lancaster Theological Seminary (now Moravian University School of Theology) after previously teaching at Rhodes College and Winthrop University.
Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated exceptional dedication to theological education, teaching courses in New Testament studies, Introduction to Theological Education, Praxis and Social Change, and research seminars for both the MATS and DMin programs.
“We are thrilled to recognize Greg’s outstanding contributions to our community with this well-deserved promotion,” says Dr. Christian Rice, Dean of the School of Theology.
“Greg’s intelligence and ongoing commitment to our mission of preparing thoughtful, engaged religious leaders make him an ideal choice for these expanded roles. His ability to bridge rigorous academic scholarship with meaningful public engagement exemplifies the kind of leadership our institution values and our students need,” Rice adds.
Carey’s primary commitment centers on preparing students for public leadership, including the vital skill of public interpretation of Scripture. Dr. Carey’s scholarly contributions are extensive, having authored or co-edited a dozen books in biblical studies with particular expertise in the book of Revelation and ancient apocalyptic literature, rhetorical interpretation, the Gospel of Luke, and public biblical interpretation.
Beyond traditional academic publications, Dr. Carey regularly contributes to The Christian Century, Religion Dispatches, Word & Way, and other venues, emphasizing the critical relationship between American Christianity and public life. His service to the broader academic community includes editorial board positions with Horizons in Biblical Theology, Biblical Interpretation, and the Review of Biblical Literature, along with national and international leadership roles with the Society of Biblical Literature.
Carey’s commitment to inclusive theological education is evident in his work with the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature, where he has co-facilitated national workshops on teaching the Bible in racially and ethnically diverse classrooms and to multiple publics.
His academic excellence is matched by his dedication to public faith engagement. Dr. Carey is a sought-after speaker in churches, alternative venues, podcasts, and webinars, addressing the threat of Christian nationalism and advocating for LGBTQ+ affirmation in Christian life. His community involvement includes active volunteer work with POWER Interfaith and service as a CASA (court-appointed special advocate) for a young person in foster care.
Carey’s promotion reflects Moravian University School of Theology’s continued commitment to academic excellence and public engagement in theological education. In his new role, he will help guide the institution’s academic vision while maintaining his dedication to preparing the next generation of religious leaders for meaningful service in our complex world.
